2017 | state of DESIGN, BERLIN

Get ready for the main design event of the German capital

The second edition of the yearly state of DESIGN, BERLIN festival will run from June 1 to June 4 at the Vollgutlager of the Alte Kindl Brauerei in Neukölln. With a program that includes exhibitions, talks, and a film day, the main event of the BERLIN DESIGN WEEK will also this time debate future design by triggering crossovers between the rapidly growing categories in the field, such as product-, industrial-, experimental-, critical- and social design. One of the many novelties will be the launch of GRAS, an online platform that promotes and sells state’s very first NIEUWE GERMAN GESTALTUNG COLLECTION. And last but not least, the festival will be a four day platform of exchange where anyone interested in design can meet designers and other professionals, national and international, face to face, and in a most informal –for Berliner– manner. So also get prepared for some serious fun.

Two exhibition platforms will stand central at the Vollgutlager, a newly renovated architectural gem which will already come by itself as a great discovery:
ALLES NEU — NIEUWE GERMAN GESTALTUNG #006 and

TOTAL CHANGE—NIEUWE GLOBAL GESTALTUNG #00

and several other presentations.

UdK professor Susanne Stauch developed the concept of the project and got Anna Badur on board to supervise it. While both will exhibit their own work elsewhere in the festival, they will also lecture on the project during the festival.

WORKSHOP: HERE & THERE

A Korea-born but Berlin-based curator and four renowned Dutch designer studios that transfer their country’s notorious design thinking on Thai tradition, turning even elephants into artisans and manufacturers – those are only some of the ingredients of ‘Here and There’, an exchange platform that was launched during the Chiang Mai Design week in Thailand last year, and that has its second session during this festival.

The group show that resulted also came with a series of side events that provided a larger framework -three workshops, a lecture, and a round table discussion- while the project will alsoculminate in a report book and a short documentary video. During state of DESIGN, BERLIN 2017, all these elements are further elaborated, and adapted to the local context, using design to reflect on contemporary culture and to explore the future of traditions, networking, facilitating "learning by going", and opening up access to materials, knowledge, and meanings that have so far been overlooked.

DECISION MAKING LABORATORY / ENTSCHEIDUNGSLABOR

WORKSHOP

Starting from the observation that more and more people want to enter the public debate in Western society, and the assumption that decision making starts with the ability to have a good conversation, this project took on the challenge to develop spaces that make this phenomenon visible and / or possible. Earlier on, students built a decision-making laboratory during the Rotterdam museumnight at the local Goethe Institute. Visitors were invited to take decisions about current issues in German society, and to experience the influence of the way a space and debate are designed on the character of decision making. At the festival, a brand new installation will be built for the occasion that set itself the same aim. The installation come with a workshop, projections, and presentations.

Design in the middle (east)

WORKSHOP

From June 1 to 4 the state of DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 festival will also host the second session of the Design in the Middle (East) workshop. Design in the Middle was initiated by the Fondazione MAXXI and School of Redesign in Rome, in collaboration with the Fondazione Baruchell. Some twenty-five designers, architects and other creatives from all over the world – from Greece, over Romania, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, to Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, and the US gathered to work for 5 days on design solutions for the Middle Eastern conflict zone. While adding up its own themes and taking a different shape, the second and four day Berlin session will build further on the proposals that resulted from the Rome workshop. More information is soon to follow.
