BELGIUM | DAAN GIELIS: SURVIVAL TACTICS 9,99€ (2015)

SOON AT THE STATE OF DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 FESTIVAL AS PART OF TOTAL CHANGE, NIEUWE GLOBAL GESTALTUNG #001

Daan Gielis was born in Beringen, lives in Antwerp, and works in Hasselt and Genk, all-in Belgium. His work combines self designed constructions with found objects, like plants, that generate an expectation. At the festival, and as part of Connecties, the Flemish platform, Gielis shows one of his best known works, Survival Tactics 9,99€, a gas cylinder that feeds a smoleing campfire. Gielis describes the installaton as ‘a futurist bonfire’ and ‘a survival tool to cook hot dogs everywhere”: “Neoliberal doctrine and disaster capitalism push every aspect of society towards the realm of the market and force us to adapt to a new way of life in which we need to ‘survive on the market’. Survival is usually understood as negative state to be in: it refers to life as reduced to its most minimal state. But what survives is also what cannot be destroyed, what cannot be undone. This is the affirmative, active side of survival: as in Plato’s ‘the soul survives the body’, there is something that cannot be destroyed. The ambiguity of this contemporary survivalism is nestled in the core of this object. On the one hand the bonfire provides the ability to cook and give light and warmth, on the other hand danger is always looming in the shape of fire and an open gas canister which is very present.”
