BELGIUM | IEF SPINCEMAILLE: ROPE (2016)
SOON AT THE STATE OF DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 FESTIVAL AS PART OF TOTAL CHANGE, NIEUWE GLOBAL GESTALTUNG #001The work of the Belgium artist Ief Spincemaille (1976) mainly consists of performances, sculptures and installations, in which he translates his fascination for nature and technology into poetic imagery. He also works as a stage designer for various theaters and opera houses. After studying philosophy at the university of Leuven aand modern music at L’aula de musica, Barcelona. he created his first artistic project in 2006. He works and lives in Leuven, Belgium, where he was appointed City Artist for the period 2014-2016, and is also part of the media art organization Werktank.
At the festival Spincemaille shows ROPE, a work he recently created as an artist in residence in Florence for Current Utopia. ROPE is meant to be a spatial intervention creating poetical spaces. It’s 100 meters long and 25 cm wide. It consists of an outer shell similar to the ropes used on offshore drilling platforms, only its core is different, its filled with foam to keep it lightweight. Nevertheless, the rope still weighs 2 kg per meter, and it takes 30 people to move it. ‘ROPE can be used as a social instrument to solve a specific problem in a particular neighborhood or district, “ Spincemaille explains, “ It can also simply be used as a physical tool to fix, fence or hold. ROPE can be an economic instrument for the promotion of a product or a company. It can also be an artistic/theatrical tool to connect your home with the neighbor’s, and his neighbor, and their neighbor…. It can be an architectural instrument to construct a wall or a pavilion. One can play an XXL game of tug-of-war; or thirty men can carry it on a train to Brussels to disrupt the established order. (…) With ROPE I enter other arenas with the will to generate change. ROPE is an attempt to create an artistic practice that deals with more than solely esthetic questions and values.”
At the festival, Spincemaille will only show a 10 meter fragment of the ROPE, knotted in such a way that it can be used as a sofa to socialize.
