GERMANY | DESIGN FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES IN MUNICH: ‘PIECE BY PIECE FURNITURE’

SOON AT THE STATE OF DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 FESTIVAL, AS PART OF ALLES NEU, NIEUWE GERMAN GESTALTUNG #006

FOR AND WITH REFUGEES: THE DESIGN FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES IN MUNICH WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE STATE OF DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 FESTIVAL WITH A PROJECT AROUND THE ‘PIECE BY PIECE FURNITURE’ WHICH IT DEVELOPED FOR THE CAFE OF ‘BELLEVUE DI MONACO’, A REFUGEE CENTRE THAT SET ITSELF THE AIM OF BECOMING ONE OF THE MAIN SOCIO-CULTURAL HUBS AT THE HEART OF THE CITY - Initiated by Matthias Marschner of Hirner und Riehl Architects and City Planning, and supervised by the designer Michael Geldmacher, the students developed a chair and table for the refugee center under Prof. Florian Petri. Recently launched, the furniture will be produced by Goin, yet the refugees are also involved in the production, personalising the pieces by sandblasting inscriptions in the messing feet, for instance. While the chair and table come with documentation that explain their intention, the furniture was developed after a series of other criteria that reached from the fifties architecture of the building over solid and stackable, to open and light, transparent, dynamic, versatile, and able to adapt to the café’s and centre’s many activities. Team members also included Aylin Patterson Aykent, Johanna Amann, Benjamin Bohnhorst, Julia Färbert, Alena Gall, Johannes Hoffmann, Philip Junk, Anja König, Katrin Lehmann, Carina Sabbagh, Andreas Siegfried, Johannes Straka, Carolin Kunert, Julia Strobl, and Marika Tiikkainen.
