BELGIUM | WESLEY MEURIS FOR NATE LIGHTS’ ARTIST EDITIONS: THE NATURE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION (2016)
SOON AT THE STATE OF DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 FESTIVAL AS PART OF TOTAL CHANGE, NIEUWE GLOBAL GESTALTUNG #001The work of the Belgian artist Wesley Meuris (1977) is driven by a fascination for the human urge to categorize, rationalize and name things. His installations research architectural typologies, unveiling hidden mechanisms and their will to control. As its name implies, the light sculpture which he shows at the festival –as part of Connecties, the Flemish platform- demands to be taken seriously. It is meticulously made out of lacquered wood, glass, and a LED strip. But its main component is a 4GB USB memory stick. Confronted with the title one can only guess that, as a container for data, and controling device, it will hold an explanation of ‘the Nature of Electromagnetic Radiation’. Yet the stick is out of reach; shielded by the sheet of glass, unreachable, The work was produced in a limited adition of 10, by and for Nate Lights' Artist Editions, curated by Ben Van den Berghe.
