Design in the Middle (East)

From June 1 to 4 the state of DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 festival will also host the second session of the Design in the Middle (East) workshop. Design in the Middle was initiated by the Fondazione MAXXI and School of Redesign in Rome, in collaboration with the Fondazione Baruchell, and also invited state of DESIGN director Max Borka during its first session as an observer. Some twenty-five designers, architects and other creatives from all over the world – from Greece, over Romania, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, to Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, and the US - gathered at the Maxxi National Museum of the 21st Century Arts beginning of March to work for 5 days on design solutions for the Middle Eastern conflict zone. Divided over 5 teams, the interdisciplinary group focused on the following issues: Food Print (Water and food rights and resources, new agriculture, new energy), Nomadentity (Open borders, immigration, dignity and identity, self-respect, self-identification), Lost in translation (Communication, cultural exchanges, e-learning), Core.Ligious (Freedom of belief, living with religious diversity, new awareness, personal spiritualism, DIY belief), and Digital Dunes (Data harvesting, mining and sharing that promote social cohesion). While adding up its own themes and taking a different shape, the second and four day Berlin session will build further on the proposals that resulted from the Rome workshop. More information is soon to follow.
