GERMANY | JULIA MÜLLING & NIKLAS JESSEN (SCHNEID DESIGN STUDIO): KASKAD
SOON AT THE STATE OF DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 FESTIVAL, AS PART OF ALLES NEU, NIEUWE GERMAN GESTALTUNG #006‘Having Schneid‘ is the german equivalent to ‚being bold‘. It also captures the essence of the philosophy behind Lübeck-based Schneid Lighting & Furniture. While focusing on creating expressive and sustainable products for interior spaces, the studio tries to combine unconventional ideas and a passionate approach with solid craftmanship, reliable techniques and an ecological approach, using natural raw materials, striking colors and clear, strong shapes, and supporting local manufacturers, be it only to keep delivery routes short. The Kaskad pendant lamp is a good example. Its linear, archetypical round shape references a cascade, an impression which is emphasized by the vivid waves on the lampshade. Kaskad has a untreated ceramic surface on the inside, for optimal and even light diffusion, and in gentle contrast to the glazed and colored outside of the lamp. While each copy is handmade by a ceramic master craftsman in a small traditional workshop in Germany, more than 10 individual processes are required to perfect the matt glazing. The lamp comes in two different sizes, three colors – ‘Soft mint‘, ‚Blush‘, and ‚Midnight blue‘ - and is complemented by a color matching textile cable. Kaskad lamps can be hung as an individual statement piece as well as in a cloud-like family. Schneid Design Studio is Julia Mülling & Niklas Jessen.
