LITHUANIA | SIMONA KAUNAITE FOR A CHAIR AND A TABLE: TABLEWARE TOLI TOLI
SOON AT THE STATE OF DESIGN, BERLIN 2017 FESTIVAL AS PART OF TOTAL CHANGE, NIEUWE GLOBAL GESTALTUNG #001Born an bred in Lithuania, where she gained her MA degree with specialization in Ceramics at the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts in 2006, Simona Kaunaite later moved to London. Working in different fields, that reach from tableware to jewelry, her main material still is ceramics. Best known for one of her first collections, Five Senses - an eye, an ear, a nose and a finger made from porcelain, and transformed into a brooche, or necklace- her continuous experimenting also walks (and crosses) the thin line between beauty and ugliness, the rough and refined, shocking and thought provoking, attraction and repulsion, questioning the meaning of apparel, in categories of design where this is all but usual. At the festival, Kaunate shows Indai Toli Toli, a stoneware tableware collection which she produces with her own ceramic design studio, A Chair and a Table, specialized in producing tableware, objects and decorations. The studio works in small batches, using a potters wheel or slip casting technique.
